Publishing Help: Self-Publishing Q & A
We get a lot of questions from soon-to-be self-published authors looking for help publishing a book. Read on for answers to the most common questions we receive on self-publishing. We also have many informational publishing help resources regarding self-publishing, book printing, how to publish a book, and DiggyPOD printing services throughout our site.
How do I get my book files to you?
Files can be sent two different ways:
- Upload your files on the order form
- Physically mail files to: DiggyPOD, Inc., 301 Industrial Drive, Tecumseh, MI 49286
What is font embedding and why is it important?
Font embedding refers to the process of making sure all the fonts used in a file are stored inside its properties — this applies to all fonts, even common fonts like Arial and Times New Roman. If the fonts are not embedded, your type could reflow or get replaced with a substitute font, which will distort your type and make your book unreadable. Please watch our Create a PDF video to see how to embed your fonts.
Does the doPDF Software work on a Mac?
No, it does not. But on a Mac you have a PDF tool already built into your operating system, and all you have to do is save your document as a PDF, and it will embed the fonts for you.
Who owns the rights to my book?
You will always own the rights to your book when you use DiggyPOD. This is not the case, however, with all self-publishing companies. Read more about the dangers of vanity presses.
How do I get an ISBN Number?
You can obtain an ISBN number from Bowker. Bowker is the only United States agency that can issue ISBN numbers. Read more about ISBN numbers.
Do you offer copyright services?
We do not offer copyright services. Read more about copyright services to determine whether or not copyrighting is right for your book.
Do you register my book with the Library of Congress?
No. You can register the book yourself, however, with the Library of Congress. (Watch out for companies that offer to register a book for you, as you might lose the rights to your book.)
How do I format my book for printing?
We have some book templates that can be downloaded from our templates and margins resource and book cover template resource. We also have a helpful YouTube video on margin formatting here.
What is the minimum page count for a book?
Our minimum page count for book printing is 16 pages for paperback and spiral bound books. For hardcover books, the minimum page count varies by the page count and the thickness of the paper. Please use our quote calculator to figure out if your book has enough pages for hardcover binding.
What is the maximum page count for a book?
Our maximum page count varies, depending on the book trim size and paper being used. But the general rule is that the book can't be any thicker than 1.75 inches. You can check out your book thickness with our book spine calculator.
Does it cost extra to include photos?
No. Before the advent of digital printing it did cost more because printing companies would use film to produce printing plates, but that is not the case anymore. You can include as many photos as you want in your book, at no extra charge!
Will the image and graphics in my book files print true to color?
DiggyPOD uses color calibration software for our digital printing presses and color monitors, but all monitors and digital printers view and print differently. If you want to make sure that the color comes out exactly how you want it, you should order one of our proofs to review before printing.
My computer screen does not match my printed proof — why?
Computer screens use the color gamut RGB and not all screens are the same resolution. When DiggyPOD prints, we use the CMYK color gamut, which will look different then a screen. DiggyPOD also uses color calibration software for our digital presses and monitors to make sure our color is accurate from day to day.
Why do you only laminate the book covers?
We believe in providing the highest quality printed book for you. Lamination helps protect the book and gives it a very high gloss look. Learn more about DiggyPOD's cover lamination here.
Can I publish a book in a custom size?
Yes, you can. Read more about our book sizes here.
Do you print books with hard covers?
Yes, we do. Please read more about our hardcover binding.
What other costs are involved?
The price you get from our pricing calculator is the price you pay, less shipping and handling.
What are your payment terms?
We require a 100% payment up front before we start your book printing. We accept MasterCard, Visa, American Express, Discover and PayPal.
Can I split the shipment of my books?
Yes, you can. When you place your order you can enter multiple locations and quantities that you want shipped to each location.
Can you blind ship my order?
Yes, we can do this for you. It's no problem.
How do I order a reprint of my book?

What is your return policy?
If you find any defects or shipping damages, you must report them within 10 calendar days after you have received the books.
